Peanut Butter and Jelly for the World

>> Saturday, April 10, 2010

As any long time readers of my blog may know, I love food. I especially love being able to mix food with science... hence my affinity for all things Alton Brown. Imagine the giddy feeling I got when I stumbled across the PB&J Campaign.

The PB&J campaign is an online effort to educate consumers and promote plant-based meals like the beloved peanut butter and jelly sandwich. While I am not vegetarian, plant-based meals do make up a large portion of my eating habits. Having a PB&J instead of a burger, for example, can save up to 3.5 pounds of carbon dioxide and save approximately 280 gallons of water. That is not even mentioning the land saved.

Cutting back on meat from an environmental standpoint is not a new concept. This extends to fish and poultry as well. Many fish people consume are caught or farmed in less than savory ways. Because of this, I am a HUGE proponent of Seafood Watch. I carry the cards and have the site saved on my phone for quick referencing when at the store or out to eat. Beef, however, is a little more tricky and harder to come by in a sustainable way. In fact, in 2006, the UN declared cattle farming as the number one contributor to climate change. Cattle rearing is also a factor in water quality degradation. To quote the article:

The livestock business is among the most damaging sectors to the earth’s increasingly scarce water resources, contributing among other things to water pollution from animal wastes, antibiotics and hormones, chemicals from tanneries, fertilizers and the pesticides used to spray feed crops.

On a lighter note, though... just by changing a few meals a week to plant and veggie based can make an impact. PB&J is a great start to that. According to the PB&J Campaign website:

If you have a PB&J instead of a red-meat lunch like a ham sandwich or a hamburger, you shrink your carbon footprint by almost 3.5 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
So go out and save the earth one peanut butter and jelly sandwich at a time!

Potspoon! Updates

>> Saturday, March 13, 2010

Hello, dear readers... hope all is well for you out there. Since the posting on Potspoon! has been erratic lately, I figured I would clue you in to what is going on around here.

First things first, Mimi (that would be me) got studio space for her little art business and has been dealing with all that growing a business entails. That also means less time for posting. However, on our Facebook Fan Page, we have been keeping the masses entertained with a "Name That Creature" game. We post pictures of critters, usually previously seen on Potspoon!, and the race is then on for who can come up with genus and species using minimal clues. It's actually quite fun and you are free to post pictures of your own as well. Many of our small updates are posted here as well. Feel free to join the fun.

Our amazing writer of all things spacey, Astro Todd, worked it out so that we could sponsor an episode of 365 Days of Astronomy. It's a daily podcast about, well, astronomy! Our episode is the March 9th episode but listen to a ton of them, they are quite fun! Also, our dear Astro Todd is in the process of starting his own blog: c squared. It's under construction at the moment, but keep in tune because if his previous posts are any indication, it will be a great blog to follow.

Lastly, many of my older readers will recall there was a mysterious "Bitters" who was supposed to contribute to the site. I think this may have been the last post she was mentioned in... that was a long time ago! Well folks, this mysterious Bitters has returned and is ready for action! She will be writing about all things techie (or anything else that suits her fancy) and you can read her first post here. Should be a fantastic series!

Now you know where we stand! What are you all up to these days?

Kids Planet

>> Friday, February 12, 2010

To add to the list of appropriate science sites for children (I should just do a compilation, but another day perhaps), I found out about a Defenders of Wildlife site created for children and teachers. It's called Kids Planet and is full of facts on endangered species, games, a teaching curriculum, coloring pages and more.

The site is pretty easy and seems like a great tool to introduce your kiddies to wildlife. There is even a page that explains ways even children can make a difference in the protection of our planet's animals.

Happy surfing!

Year in Review

>> Saturday, January 2, 2010

Ok, so I am a little late with this, but give me a break. :D

The following is a list compiled by using information from Lijit and StatCounter.

Busiest Days (only top three from most down):

January 28th: I actually had two posts that day. One apologizing for my page not loading correctly and the other was a kick off for my Year of the Gorilla stuff. Interesting.

July 9th: The day I did my poll about what colors to make the site.

February 23rd: One of my Monday Blues installments that SeaLaura keeps up with, but I suck at. I may just do them on Roogoodoo, instead.

Now I am sure you all know that those may have been my busiest days, but not necessarily my busiest post.

Busiest Posts

These were determined by number of visitors to my site via search.

Debate! Sex vs. Gender was a huge winner in this category. Obviously there are lots of people who look this up a lot. Surprisingly, this most viewed post has no comments.

A strong runner up was the Caribbean Reef Squid post. Many of the searches came from coastal areas and makes me wonder if it was due to marine science schools. I would like to think it was because of my awesome anatomy sketches!

Fig 1. awesome anatomy sketch!>
COPDPart 2: The Lungs was also a big one from the search terms "pictures of the lungs," "how the lungs work," and "anatomy of the lungs."

Recently, though, the numbers are steadily going up for searches on the Clearwater Challenge 3. This has been the biggest search in the past 2 months, but still hasn't caught up to the ones above.

What was your favorite post of the year? There were only 137 posts this year so it shouldn't take you long to review. Happy New Year!

The Need for More

>> Saturday, November 14, 2009

... but what? I have recently been reworking my schedules and am figuring out exactly when I need to do what to get the most out of my week. For those of you that haven't been following on Roogoodoo, I have a bit on my plate lately. I still want to provide you with all sorts of fun science tidbits, though, so I have to ask you, what would you like to see more of? I know the videos are popular, but are pretty time consuming, unless you wouldn't mind short news briefs like this one. These types of videos are much easier to make. Or do you want more space and astronomy? Are endangered species your thing? Random science news? Vote below and leave comments please! Every little bit helps the team here at Potspoon! know what you want to read. Thanks guys!

Don't forget...

I am only doing science related posts on Potspoon! now so if you crave random posts about Floyd, island life, or whatever, make sure you check out Roogoodoo. Have a happy weekend!

Roogoodoo

>> Wednesday, July 15, 2009

In island talk it means a mess of things or a jumble. Like stupid people doing dumb things at the traffic light to make the traffic worse. Roogoodoo. Like ridiculous drama that you have nothing to do with cause you are just minding your own business enjoying the live music and someone's drink ends up in your lap. Roogoodoo.

So what is the point of this lesson in West Indian vernacular? I started another blog... yes yes say what you will... I think Potspoon! needs to stay more science oriented, but I like other things so I am going to use the other site as a catch all. Posts about what I do for fun. Posts about art. Posts about my mood swings. Whatever. I just know it needs to be that way. A lot of nonsense; hence, roogoodoo. Besides, the name goes with the theme of West Indies terminology as my blog title! Should be interesting anyway. That way, you can still get the Floyd pictures that are so popular with out the science or get all the science you want with out the Floyd pictures. :D

K, bye!

Help Please!

>> Thursday, July 9, 2009

Okay, so I worked out most of the glitches on the site that prevented it from loading properly on IE. I also changed a few things with the commenting. You may notice the "commentluv" box. That is to post a link to your most recent entry below your comment. We'll see how it works out. I have seen it used on other sites and really liked it, but you can let me know either way. Now on to more pressing matters... I'm stuck again and am asking for your help! I want to know what colors I should go with (again) for my blog layout. I fugured what I like only matters partially as you guys are the ones that support me by reading it. You are the one that has to look at it. So now on to the poll.

Thanks for your help (again). See ya soon!

Pseudo-Hiatus!

>> Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Ok ok... I have been really trying hard to avoid this word, but it appears I may have to be honest with all my bloggy buddies. The next 2 weeks are going to be a big (BIG) struggle for me. I really have been trying to post more, but it is hard and there is a really good reason for it. I can't divulge the details right now, but it's a really REALLY dramatic change and even though it has nothing to do with the blog, it is still having a serious affect on my time. Yes, I know I still have time to go to the beach, but that is different. That is super valuable Nick and Mimi time. I hope you all forgive me for being a slacker... especially on the cusp of my one year bloggiversary.

By the way, I will have something exciting planned for May 3rd. Potspoon!'s birthday will be celebrated, even if nothing else goes up. I will still post (I hope), but sporadically. And my next COPD post is almost done. Again, I just really want to get all the info in there and with not too much time I am going between an elementary book and a post-doctoral dissertaion in my writing style. Not good. Ay, me.

Pretty much (as if it weren't obvious), my posting frequency will be erratic. The posts will seem short. It's only temporary.

Microscopic Imagery- Photos of Tiny Things

>> Sunday, February 8, 2009

My mum-in-law (thanks Mom #2!) sent me this amazing link today to a website called Visuals Unlimited. The website is full of amazing photos of the microscopic and natural world. The website is smart and won't let you just upload images to other websites... So I want you to click here.

Did you click?

Ok... I know not everyone is into bugs like me, but they have all kinds of neat and sometimes disturbing (they do medical photography as well) images. The skill level is outstanding. I think this is the sort of skill all photographers aspire to... if we ever reach that level is another story all together. In the end though, it is jut really beautiful stuff.

Go. Look. Enjoy!

Mas Problemas

>> Sunday, February 1, 2009

Ok ok... I give. Since my website seems to keep getting kicked by IE (Internet Explorer) because of some of the scripting... I am going to a very old blogger template. Unfortunately this means I will lose any of my wonderful comments, but it's ok. I will still have them save on a JS -kit website so that I can remenisc on all the wonderful things you all write. I'm quite sad as I really love the new layout, but I am here to please so I must revert. So many of you liked it as well, but I am sure I will come up with something. Oh, and don't forget to start thinking about your posts for Monday Blues. Tomorrow's is going to be over at SeaLaura, so go leave your links in the comments there.

Science for the Kiddies

>> Thursday, January 22, 2009

While carousing on a site where I have gotten some great science news in the past, I actually clicked the link on the right for Science News for Kids, and I must say, I WAS BLOWN AWAY! The site is run by Eureka Alert. Needless to say, the writing style is easy to understand, makes references to kids pop culture so that they can relate, and is really just great. Go see for yourself!

Some examples of recently published articles are:

and so much more!

If you have a little budding scientist, this site is for them. There are even fun links like birds and their songs and other sciencey websites to visit. Ok, I am off for more browsing!

A New Badge

>> Monday, November 3, 2008

See that up there? Right below my header? It's tiny, but very important. I am now officially a member of the Nature Blog Network. Yeah, I know, so are 529 other blogs (there's 530). I'm happy anyway. I feel vindicated being alongside blogs I already read like Greg Laden and The Other 95%. Sure they are in the top 40... but I will work my way up... don't you worry! :D As of this post, I am 494. You know what that is? NOT LAST. *victory dance*

An Up and Coming Wildlife Host

>> Saturday, September 6, 2008

... and no it's not me. This is what I get for not having a TV. I found him surfing the web today... Apparently there is this syrupy sweet boy who does his own wildlife minis also and they are really good. If I had a television perhaps I would have caught his appearances on various shows. His name is Enzo and his show rocks. His show is ENZOology and is quite popular apparently. I was blown away. It makes my videos seem pointless... *le sigh* What he is doing is amazing though. I really wish more children viewed the outdoors and sciences this way. You should go to his website. It really is awsome. Yay, Enzo!
