The Continuing Gulf Disaster: Part 2

>> Sunday, October 3, 2010

This video was posted October 1st. It comes in and out of the news occassionally, but the fact is, this disaster (while minimal compared to oil disasters on the coast of Africa) serves as a wake up call to us here.

BP Blocks Film Crews

>> Sunday, May 23, 2010

Since I am glad that little by little the spill is making its way back into the news, I thought I would write about how it is Turtle Day, but then I saw this:

Really, BP? You are just going to pretend there isn't oil washing up on shore? Ignore the fact that so many turtles (many of which are endangered) haven't turned up dead?

I still hope you will click the happy link above about Turtle Day. I felt compelled to make sure as many people as possible watched this video.

More Oil Spill Info

>> Thursday, May 20, 2010

Since the mass media has decided this oil spill is not heavily newsworthy anymore, I will post what I can find. This video is done by Defenders of Wildlife and was filmed in Florida's J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. In it, she speaks of exactly what animals are going to be affected and how. There is a lot of very good information on this video.

That Oil Spill Incident

>> Sunday, May 16, 2010

It isn't on the news as much anymore, which is a bit of a shame, but there is still a massive oil slick out in the Gulf and we've yes to see the full effects of what it can do. I remember as a kid getting tar stuck to my feet at the beach. I like having that NOT happen, thank you, so I appreciate what many agencies like the National Wildlife Federation are trying to do. The best thing you can do in situations like this is to educate the masses.

Oceana also has an entire page dedicated to this horrible disaster. Just because it isn't in the news you watch doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Oil Spill

I have been watching this story with a lot of interest for a while now and I have not a whole lot to say. I wanted to talk statistics and science and about what this means for wildlife in the Gulf, but I keep going back to politics and echoes of "Drill, baby, drill" run through my head. I can't bring myself to write about this travesty that is occurring because I think too many people, too many organizations, have tried so hard for and against this. So many people have risked their lives working on the rigs and protesting them. Who am I to say anything? I know biologically what this will mean to fisheries, wetlands, and bird nesting; but after I speak of all of those things, then what?

I guess, the only thing I really can say is that my thoughts go out to the people who lost family during the explosion. I will also be thinking of all the people that have livelihoods tied to wetlands and marine life and hope everything works out in the end. Not that my thoughts mean anything, they are just thoughts. Still.
