Science Updates

>> Sunday, November 14, 2010

Wow! There actually has been a lot going on in the world and I've mainly been posting links to articles on the Potspoon! Fan Page just to save on time, but I may as well write up some snippets here. We have quite a bit of a range of science stories to cover but I am only putting up a few with links so you can explore on your own.

  • Paleontologist finally believe they have identified the oldest known dinosaur embryos. The embryos belong to genus Massospondylus and are believed to be about 190 million years old. The embryos have over sized heads much in the way that many modern vertebrates do. This would mean that this dinosaur may have needed some parental care early on making it the earliest parental care evidence.

  • In a story that has be written up in a few of my favorite online sources for science news, cats' balance even extends to how they drink. Using the inertia of the moving liquid, they actually quite delicately suck the liquid up in a column and close their mouths before gravity kicks in and makes the liquid fall again. This minimizes spills and messes.

  • IBM unveiled their plans to make super small processors for the worlds most powerful supercomputers. The processors, according to this article from the BBC, would shrink them to about the size of a sugar cube.

  • If you like watching the skies for auroras, tonight and tomorrow may be perfect for you. A closely watched sunspot, 1123 to be exact, recently sent a "blast" of filaments towards earth and we should be receiving a magnetic glancing blow tonight and tomorrow. Should be quite a show.
Well, that's it for now, folks. I hope you have an awesome week!

Birds of a Feather?

>> Monday, February 1, 2010

Circling the news sites is an article about Sinosauropteryx prima, a little dinosaur that has feathers. It was once thought that it was covered in bristles, but upon further inspection it was determined that these "bristles" are, in fact, feathers and orange ones at that. They also noticed that the pigment came in bands along the tail.

This carnivorous dino is the first one to have its exact feather colors determined. Now, while this may seem strange to many of you, dinosaurs have long been linked to prehistoric birds and the like. In fact, modern day birds are thought to have evolved from theropods, the group of dinosaurs our orange little buddy (only about four feet in length) belonged to back in the day. These findings aid in the debate of the evolution of feathers as well. This shows that feathers did not evolve out of necessity of flight, but were perhaps used for something else like displays or insulation.

You can read more about this awesome dinosaur here.

Dinosaur National Monument

>> Friday, January 2, 2009

Since I was grumbley yesterday from not finding my pictures through the hordes of CDs and the like that I have full of them (I really need a new digital camera) I am posting a lot of the ones I finally did find of myself at Dinosaur National Monument. It is a really remarkable place. There are amazing vistas, stunning rock formations, fossils in the walls, cave paintings... luckily Nick and I were some of the last visitors to the Quarry Visitor Center. The ground actually shifted and cracked the foundation and did considerable other damage to the building. You can still see the museum virtually at the National Park Service website.

First, the one for yesterday's post: Me with a Dinosaur Femur.

Nick posing (again) in front of some crazy rocks.

Hello 2009!

>> Thursday, January 1, 2009

So almost a day into it and I think this year is ok so far... not great, but it will do. Ok, sarcasm does not convey in type very well. It was a beautiful day today. I hope it rains soon though. To start the New Year with a bang, I am going to give you a little blurb about dinosaurs.

Recently, paleontologists in China hit the mother lode. In a one area 990 ft x 30 ft (about 300 m x 9 m) more than 3,000 bones were found. Since March, scientists have uncovered some 7,600 bones in one province. The area was already known as "Dinosaur City" but a mining exploration done unearthed more than had been found there in the past.

Argh! I was going to insert me next to a dino leg bone taken at Dinosaur National Monument... but I can't find my pictures! I will update this later. Happy New Day! Happy New Year!
