Going Metric

>> Thursday, August 21, 2008

I know many of Potspoon!'s readership is in the US somewhere so the thought of converting to a metric system frightens most of us (no pun intended). SI (Système International) is the primary unit system throughout the world. This is not just in science either. It is the most used on a daily basis personally and is the OFFICIAL system of units for international commerce. Three countries, the US, Liberia, and Myanmar, are digging in their heels and have not adopted SI as the official system of measure. This is puzzling because the metric system is based on the number 10 making conversions simple and the basis for these measurements is set in platinum. Ah well. There are some groups that REALLY are on the push to convert us into a Metric Nation. I am all for it, but I am a scientist. What about you guys?

Even though I am a science and numbers phobe, I am for it. Why not be part of the international community? I think it would make things easier on everyone.
PS : gracias for the award, I am so honored!

@ sealaura- It's just easy because even if you are a number-phobe, it's all based on 10's making it really easy.... and you are welcome!

I think it's just that: number phobia. Telling people that something as basic as buying a gallon of milk is going to change frightens them. So, it's hard for people to change. That being said, I'm ok with converting to metric.

YAY! Thank you Amanda! I just think it's strange that people think of it as a conversion when most buy 750 mL bottles of Wine and 2 L cokes.

Dear Mimi,
I have never understood why the US is not metric. It is so easy....
They have their money in tens...
We can be metric in our own homes and think in centimeters!
Sherry who would walk a meter in your shoes

@ Sherry- It doesn't make sense to me either. It's such a simple system to use. Ah, well.
