Pseudo-Hiatus!

Ok ok... I have been really trying hard to avoid this word, but it appears I may have to be honest with all my bloggy buddies. The next 2 weeks are going to be a big (BIG) struggle for me. I really have been trying to post more, but it is hard and there is a really good reason for it. I can't divulge the details right now, but it's a really REALLY dramatic change and even though it has nothing to do with the blog, it is still having a serious affect on my time. Yes, I know I still have time to go to the beach, but that is different. That is super valuable Nick and Mimi time. I hope you all forgive me for being a slacker... especially on the cusp of my one year bloggiversary.
By the way, I will have something exciting planned for May 3rd. Potspoon!'s birthday will be celebrated, even if nothing else goes up. I will still post (I hope), but sporadically. And my next COPD post is almost done. Again, I just really want to get all the info in there and with not too much time I am going between an elementary book and a post-doctoral dissertaion in my writing style. Not good. Ay, me.
Pretty much (as if it weren't obvious), my posting frequency will be erratic. The posts will seem short. It's only temporary.![]()
Monday Blues: Lucky 13!
>> Monday, April 13, 2009
The moon has been lovely recently and since I (still) do not have a digital camera again, you will have to suffice with an old picture I took of the moon on a day trip to Virgin Gorda. I love when the moon is out during the day. Looks like a little baby's head poking out of the water. The sky was incredible that day.
I am glad I have this Monday off! I had some much needed beach time this morning with the hubs and Floyd. I also collected quite the hauk of sea glass. I am really getting out of hand with this sea glass business. Out. Of. Hand. If you haven't been with me long, you may not know that I even did a video about it. Horrid. I know.
Remember you can always participate in Monday Blues. Leave a comment here or over at SeaLaura's site with a link to your picture or post with the theme "Monday Blues." While you're over there, check out her cute little post about a cute little car. Happy Monday!![]()
Mercury 7
>> Friday, April 10, 2009
This is a short one since it is a holiday and many people don't have too much free time.
50 years ago (April 9th, 1959) NASA introduced its first astronaut class, the Mercury Seven. The seven men were the first to prove that it was indeed possible for humans to work and live in space. Six of the seven men actually did Mercury missions. The seventh did an Apollo-Soyuz flight. Happy Friday!![]()

This post (or series as it is turning out to be) is dedicated to Wendy.
What is COPD?
COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is actually an umbrella term that refers to a group of lung diseases that block the airways in the lungs. Since these disease block airways and airflow, the simple act of breathing becomes increasingly difficult. The most common of these diseases are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The word chronic means "long-term" and treatment for COPD is usually just to control and minimize the symptoms, not reverse the damage to your lungs.
What is emphysema?
It is a lung disease that causes damage to the air sacs in your lungs. The most common cause is smoking and the damage gets progressively worse over time. Persons with air sacs that are diseased cannot fill their lungs with fresh air, therefor limiting the bodies supply of oxygen. Common symptoms are chronic coughing that does not produce mucus, wheezing, swelling around ankles, and wight loss.
What is chronic bronchitis?
This lung disease actually causes an inflammation of the main airways in your lungs. Smoking causes it and allergies, secondhand smoke, and air pollution make it worse. Some symptoms are coughing with mucus, wheezing, fatigue, and ankle and foot swelling. There is no cure for chronic bronchitis.
The next post in the series will be about how the lungs work to give you a better understanding of how COPD can affect your life.![]()
Feeling Froggy
>> Tuesday, April 7, 2009
I can't believe I am on post 208 and all I can come up with are frogs. I do love frogs, but still. It's okay. My schedule will calm down in a bit. I am a bit over extended at the moment, but I know it will get better. Anyway, enough about me... onto the frogs.
The first frog was big in news in February and was known as the 'frog from hell.' Fossils for a frog that sat at 16 inches high (yikes) were found in Madagascar. The frogs structure resembles a horned-toad (see artists rendition to the right) and if it follows the family trait, would have been an ill tempered frog. The modern frogs- which are found in South America by the way- are ambush-style predators and will literally attack anything that goes by. I would not want to be caught in the jungle with this guy jumping on my head!
At the opposite end of the spectrum, however, is the tiniest frog ever found. The aptly named Noble’s Pygmy Frog holds the record for tiny frog at 11.4 millimeters. It was found in the Andes and is one of the smallest vertebrates ever found above 3000 meters (almost 10,000 ft) above sea level. Cute huh?![]()

I'm here...
>> Friday, April 3, 2009
Aside being super busy from work, I have been working on a post dedicated to one of my readers. I had been working so hard to get all the information correct, I didn't even realize so many days had gone by! I should have been posting something along the way, but alas... I am a scatterbrain. Hopefully I will get this post done today, but I also have more bags to paint and some other stuff to settle. Argh.![]()
